I also co-vidded with sisabet on her Lois Lane vid I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked which can be found streaming and for download here at her LJ. We also had a non-premiering Merlin/Arthur vid in Nearly New, Crazy in Love, which can be found streaming here. This year's Vividcon was lovely and awesome and thank you to all the wonderful concom staff for making it memorable.
Yay, a Skins vid! And gen 1 as well! ♥
The thing I love about gen 1 is that it seems to feel more real than gen 2. At least, I cared more about the characters, and I felt that the Skins brand of surface superficiality was more evident as something that's only on the surface, covering up some genuine underlying darkness and, at the same time, some truly touching, beautiful moments of friendship and poignancy.
And you just captured that feeling so well with this vid, the song choice, the way it's been put together. It brought back all the happiness, the WTFuckery, that sort of heightened weirdness of teenage-dom undercut with moments of genuine emotion, which aren't any less real just because the adults can't seem to see past the partying. The segment from 2:12 - 2:26 made me teary and gave me chills. As a self-portrait (assuming you didn't mean it, like, ironically or anything!) I found it incredibly touching and I really liked it.
Hope to work my way through the other vids in this post and leave feedback in due course. :)
Thanks for the comment. That was exactly the way I felt about the group dynamic in gen 1, and the ending of series 2 just ripped my heart out (I cried more at the end of that episode than at my own high school graduation). And yes, it was a VERY earnest self-portrait vid ....
I have to say, I thought this was an *awesome* series of vids!--you were just like, throwing strike after strike after strike! Boom! boom! boom! What a fucking groove you must be in! You should like, keep going! You are clearly on a helluva roll! BRAVA!
I'll be back for the others, but for now, I loved Pursuit of Happiness. I don't watch the show, but the emotion came through very well, giving me a clear sense of what makes this character tick. And that photo of dead wee!Vince from FNL broke my heart!
I'm always interested to hear how people unfamiliar with the source interpret the vid, so I'm glad to know you got what D'Angelo was going through. (And skip to the next vid before Wallace's ketchup scene! He'll go down south to live with his grandma and change his name and play football! Yay!)
I have so much love for Pursuit of Happiness. I've been watching it over and over trying to figure out how to put it in words. The clip choices are perfection. The layers of meaning are awesome, like at around :50 when you match the line 'no turning back' with D'Angelo giving Wallace cash for going back to school. There are so many little things like that that made me glee. (Wallace smiling on the word word 'shining' is another. Or 'bed full of sorrows with Wallace sleeping on the interrogation room table.' Sorry, I'm rewatching as I type this and I keep seeing more things I need to mention.)
I also love the contrast between D'Angelo at the fancy restaurant at 2:18 to Orlando's at 2:19. It really highlights his comfort levels at the different places. The intercutting between D'Angelo at the club with Avon to Bodie and Poot with Wallace is really powerful.
Sorry for how long this got. But I love the vid, and there should be so many more Wire fanworks of this quality.
Thanks. I love that moment in season 1 where the cops show D'Angelo exactly what following in his uncle's shadow has done to not just his own life, but to the lives of those he really loves. I'm glad my intention came across to people unfamiliar with the source, too.
Aww, I believe you. I made that vid in December 2009, so I guess by now I've moved on from anger to acceptance ... but it is def. the vid I feel I put the most of my bare self into, so hearing it has an effect on someone else helps me in some way deal with things.
Pursuit of Happiness is such a compelling, smart vid! D was one of my favorite characters in the 'verse and this is such a complete portrait of his journey in S1. If you're going to have dl links I'll definitely be checking back for that one...
These were all fantastic! I especially like Get Back, because that is totally how Uther rolls, King Rat, because it gave me serious chills, and of course I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked impossibly made me want to watch Smallville again.
Oh, and I've adored Crazy In Love since it was first posted. :)
*flails madly* Who woulda thunk it's even possible to make a Merlin vid to Ludacris?! Yell, not me anyway, but I'm very happy to have been proven wrong. I loved it, it's such a great idea, and really well executed, too.
As for Pursuit of Happiness - I don't even know what to say. I hope I'll come up with a more coherent response and shall get back to you. It's brilliant.
Just watched Pursuit of Happiness and it has left me all sniffly for D'Angelo all over again. Love The Wire and am so glad there are now more vids around for that fandom.
Laos, loved the your Uther vid. Never would have thought it possible to vid Merlin to Ludacris and you pulled it off in a genius fashion. Thanks x
I went to littleheaven70's place today to watch the CVV discs, and we killed ourselves laughing at Get Back. Damn, but that Uther is fierce. :D I love the cutting in this, the attitude of it. I especially loved the segment in counterpoint to Arthur. Awesome. :D
